In terms of their general profile, the average age of all female applicants was thirty-one years; the most common county of origin was Cork; July 1941 saw the peak in applications for travel permits; the greatest number of female applicants were based in London at the time of application. Female applicants were more likely to be single than married and the most commonly cited reason for requesting a travel permit was to return for a holiday or temporary visit. This is reflective of the fact that nurses (the largest cohort of working women in the files) were given holiday leave and often travel subsidies by their employers.
